A Journey of Faith, Compassion, and Hope

“When you step into places of poverty and abandonment, God shines brightly through you and lifts you in ways you never imagined.”

by Tammy, Volunteer and Supporter

My desire to go to Africa began in 1985 after watching the film Out of Africa. Not long after, while working as a flight attendant, I had a layover in Cabo Verde. What I saw there opened my eyes to the reality of deep poverty, and something in my heart was forever changed.

Years later, I took my first mission trip with my church, and that is where everything truly began. I was deeply burdened by what I saw — villages where children survived on almost nothing, hospitals filled with young lives weakened by unsafe water and lack of nutrition. By day, the Lord carried me as we visited communities and showed love wherever we went. By night, I wept and prayed, finding strength only through faith.

It was during this time that I learned something profound: when you step into places of poverty, neglect, and abandonment, God shines brightly through you. He lifts you in ways you never imagined and makes a way when you commit your time, your heart, or your resources. I prayed often, asking how I could help — and God opened the door.

Finding Purpose and Community

On my second mission trip, I stayed with an incredible woman of faith who was leading a church with a heart for children and community care. Through this journey, I met Barrie, Jean, and Lisa Jennings, who were prayerfully planning something God had placed on Jean’s heart — a children’s home that would provide safety, love, and opportunity.

I stayed in touch with Lisa after that trip and followed the journey as Mayenjane began to take shape. There were many steps, many prayers, and many doors that needed to open — but slowly and faithfully, Mayenjane became a reality.

Over the years, I have been blessed to partner with Jean and the wider ministry, watching Mayenjane grow and evolve. Being part of this journey has been humbling and deeply meaningful. I was fortunate to visit and meet the children who lived there at the time — many of whom are now grown — and to see firsthand how love, care, and dedication can shape lives.

A Lasting Legacy

Mayenjane’s story is far from over. The home will never be empty of purpose, because God continues to open doors and lead the way forward. Having seen where contributions go and how thoughtfully resources are used, I trust wholeheartedly that the future being built is a bright one.

I feel part of a legacy — one rooted in faith, compassion, and commitment. I have made lifelong friendships through Mayenjane, and I know in my heart that my giving supports something truly special.

When people praise me for giving, they don’t realise that the joy is all mine. What the children and this community have given me far outweighs anything I could ever give in return.

If you are able to visit and meet the beautiful people of Eswatini, it is a wonderful experience. But if you cannot, and you still feel a desire to make a difference, I encourage you to let God lead you — just as He led me. I promise, it will be an amazing journey.

If Tammy’s story has inspired you, there are many ways to support or walk alongside Mayenjane Trust. We invite you to join us on this journey.
